Escorts

When escorts are needed and # of escorts required

Width

  • Loads over 15′ up to 18′ requires minimum one front escort.
  • Loads wider than 18’ up to 20’ require 1 front escort and police escort
  • Loads wider then 20’ require 2 escorts (Front and Back) and 2 police escorts
  • When any part of the load or vehicle extends beyond the left of roadway centerline on 2-way/2-lane highways, one escort is required.

Length

  • Loads exceeding 110’ up to 160’ require 1 escort (Front)
  • Loads exceeding 160’ up to 200’ require two escorts (Front and Back)
  • Loads exceeding 200’ require 2 escorts (Front and Back) and a police escort

Height

  • Loads greater than 16’ require an escort (Front) with high pole

Weight

  • Loads exceeding 350,000 lbs require 1 escort following the load and a police escort

Escort vehicle requirements can differ significantly by state in terms of mandatory driver qualifications, training, certifications, vehicle weights, obligatory signage/flags/lighting, necessary onboard equipment, and more. The ODS team can provide you with all additional requirements specific to your route.

Operating Times

Except as otherwise specified in a permit, a vehicle, load, or vehicle and load that is overweight, but not oversize, may operate 24 hours a day, including weekends and restricted-travel holidays.

If size does not exceed 12’ 00” wide, 13’ 06” high or 150’ 00” long:

  • No hours of operation restrictions in 67 counties unless specified on an individual permit.
  • Unless otherwise specified on permit, if traveling in Columbia, Dane, Milwaukee, Rock or Waukesha counties, vehicle may not be operated:
  1. Between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Sunday
  2. Between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Friday between the 4th Friday in May and Labor Day

If size is greater than 12’ 00” wide, 13’ 06” high or 150’ 00” long,the vehicle may not be operated (unless otherwise stated on the permit)

  • During the hours of darkness
  • Between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Friday between the 4th Friday in May and Labor Day
  • During the period beginning at noon on Saturday and continuing until sunrise Sunday
  • Between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Sunday

If traveling on the Milwaukee County Expressway greater than legal width, height or length,
the vehicle may not be operated (except on US 45 between West Florist Avenue and West Hampton Avenue and on I-94 between Waukesha line and 108th Street):

  • Between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. and between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday
  • Between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. Friday
  • Between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. Sunday

Maximum allowed dimensions on the Milwaukee County Expressway are 14’ 0” wide, 14’ 06” high or 150’ 00” long.

Except as otherwise specified in a permit, no oversize vehicle or vehicle combination operating under a permit issued under this chapter may be operated in Columbia, Dane, Milwaukee, Rock, and Waukesha counties between the hours of 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on any of the following days:

(a) Sunday.
(b) Any Friday in the period beginning on the 4th Friday in May and ending on Labor Day.
(c) Any restricted-travel holiday.
(d) The day before any restricted-travel holiday, except July 3 if that day falls on a Saturday.

No oversize vehicle or vehicle combination operating under a permit issued under this chapter and that exceeds 12′ wide, 131⁄2 feet in height, or 150′ in length, may operate in any county:

(a) During the hours of darkness.
(b During the period beginning at 12:00 noon on Saturday and continuing until sunrise on Sunday.
(c) Between 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Sunday.
(d) During the period beginning at 12:00 noon on the day preceding and continuing until sunrise on the day following every restricted-travel holiday.

No oversize vehicle or vehicle combination may operate on any part of the Milwaukee county expressway system constructed pursuant to §59.84, Stats., at the following days and times:

a) Monday through Thursday between 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

b) Friday between 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m.

c) Friday or Sunday between 3:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
