Notes:

  • Districts and Parkway may require additional escort or time restrictions.
  • West Virginia Parkway Authority: Loads greater than 16′ wide must be able to clear 2’9″ high concrete barriers.

State police
When nighttime travel is allowed due to a permit involving crossing of the WV state line and the adjacent state permit requires nighttime travel, all escorts as required on the permit must be replaced by police escort(s) if traveling at night.

Super loads:

  • Weights or dimensions exceeding any of the limits for single trip permits are super loads.
  • No limit on weight but all loads must pass a bridge analysis.
  • No limit on dimensions (except for overhang) but overall size must be suitable for the route.

Escort vehicle requirements can differ significantly by state in terms of mandatory driver qualifications, training, certifications, vehicle weights, obligatory signage/flags/lighting, necessary onboard equipment, and more. The ODS team can provide you with all additional requirements specific to your route.

Operating Times

Overweight only: Travel for vehicles that are overweight up to and including 110,000 pounds but not oversize is allowed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Overweight vehicles exceeding 110,000 pounds can travel from sunrise to sunset, Monday through Friday.
The following loads can travel 7 days/week:

  • Width of 10’6″ up to 14′
  • Length 75′ to 95′ (only on 4-lanes or more highways)

All other overdimensions can travel Monday through Friday except for widths exceeding 16’1″ which can only travel on Sunday morning before noon on 4-lane or more highways.

Nighttime travel is allowed for permits involved the crossing of the West Virginia line if the adjacent state permit requires nighttime travel. All escorts as required on the permit must be replaced by police escort(s) if traveling at night.

Routes which cannot safely accommodate the above dimensions or weights may be rerouted or denied or have more restrictive travel times.

Weekend travel:

Weekend travel, when allowed, is given upon request.

Holidays:

No travel on New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.

Restricted travel (general):

  • School Bus Hours No travel allowed Monday through Friday on two-lane highways for escorted vehicles from 7 AM to 9 AM and 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM from August through June 7.
  • Charleston Area: No travel allowed for escorted vehicles from 7 AM to 9 AM and 4 PM to 6 PM during daylight savings time. During Eastern Standard Time, travel is allowed only from 9 AM to 4 PM. Charleston area includes I64 between Exit 39 and Exit 85, I77 between Exit 106 and Exit 85, US119 from Ruth to I64, and all other routes within 5 miles of the Charleston City Limits
  • West Virginia University: No travel in Monongalia, Marion, Harrison and Preston Counties on Football Games the day of home games.
  • Pioneer Days Festival: No travel in Marlinton (Pocahontas County)
  • State Fair: No travel on US219 from I64 to Ronceverte (Greenbrier County)
  • Treasure Mountain Festival: No travel in Franklin (Pendleton County)
  • Forest Festival: No travel in Elkins (Randolph County)
  • Bridge Day: No travel on US 19 between US 60 and Oak Hill (Fayette County)

West Virginia Turnpike

Requests for the West Virginia Turnpike will be considered on an individual basis.

Loads over 14’ wide may run Monday through Friday only on all routes except the WV Turnpike. This includes loads over 16’ wide that were previously restricted to Sunday only.

Travel for oversize vehicles which are 14′ 0″ or less wide and any length, height, or weight (except for loads approved at low impact) is allowed on all routes except the West Virginia Turnpike* (when requested) from sunrise to sunset, 7 days a week.

The West Virginia Turnpike allows weekend travel for loads:

  • no more than 95’ long and/or
  • with no more than 15’ combined overhang and/or
  • no more than 14’6” high and/or
  • with a gross vehicle weight of no more than 110,000 lbs.
