Police escorts

Any load with an overall width over 18’ or height over 17’ may require THP escorts. THP Escort will require 2-3 troopers and it can take an extra 10 days to schedule the move.

Super loads:

Any load exceeding 16′ wide, 15’6” high or 165,000 lbs. is considered a super load, requires a route survey, and may require a law enforcement escort.

Escort vehicle requirements can differ significantly by state in terms of mandatory driver qualifications, training, certifications, vehicle weights, obligatory signage/flags/lighting, necessary onboard equipment, and more. The ODS team can provide you with all additional requirements specific to your route.

Operating Times

Continuous movement is allowed without restricted curfew hours if load is less than 12’6” in width, 15’ in height, or 90’ in length.

Overweight/overdimensional permitted loads are allowed 24/7 movements unless the load is classified as a super load (over 165,000 lbs., 16’ wide, or 15’6” high). Superheavy/extradimensional loads those dimensions may be restricted for time of movement based on conditions of the road, traffic volumes, or other conditions affecting public safety and convenience as the department may determine.

No movement of vehicles exceeding 12’6” in width, 15’ in height, or 90’ in length on the interstate system of highways between the hours of 7:00AM to 9:00AM and 4:00PM to 6:00PM from Monday through Friday in the following counties: Davidson, Hamilton, Shelby, Knox and Rutherford.
