Escorts

Police escort:

An escort by uniformed State Police or local police shall be required for movement of super loads and buildings in excess of 16′ wide.

Super loads:

A super load permit is required for any load exceeding 160′ long (on 4-lane highway), 16′ wide, 14’6″ high (depending on the route) and/or 201,000 lbs.

Escort vehicle requirements can differ significantly by state in terms of mandatory driver qualifications, training, certifications, vehicle weights, obligatory signage/flags/lighting, necessary onboard equipment, and more. The ODS team can provide you with all additional requirements specific to your route.

Operating Times

Sunrise to sunset 7/days a week. Urbanized areas travel restrictions shown on form M-938.

Travel allowed 24 hours a day, seven days a week if load does not exceed 10′ wide, 135,000 lbs, 10′ in width, or any height or length limitations if the vehicle or combination is operated at prevailing speeds.

Restricted travel

Movement under permit in urbanized areas is authorized 7 days a week only during the following time periods: 3AM – 7:30AM, 9AM – 4PM, and 7PM to sunset. 9:00AM–4PM only, through the Fort Pitt, Squirrel Hill, or Liberty Tunnels in Allegheny County.

Permission must be obtained from local authorities for the use of local roads and streets.

Holidays

Movement under permit is not authorized during any of the following holidays specified in this clause and the day preceding these holidays: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, and Christmas Day.

Adverse weather

Movement will be restricted during unfavorable weather or road conditions (snow, ice, driving rain, fog) or other atmospheric conditions which restrict visibility to less than 1,000′, or winds sufficient to cause the wheels of the semi to deflect more than 6″.
