Escort vehicle requirements can differ significantly by state in terms of mandatory driver qualifications, training, certifications, vehicle weights, obligatory signage/flags/lighting, necessary onboard equipment, and more. The ODS team can provide you with all additional requirements specific to your route.

Operating Times

Travel allowed during hours of darkness, weekend, holidays, and red route highways providing dimensions do not exceed 10’ in width, 15’6” in height, or 110’ in length.

Travel is allowed during the hours of daylight, 7 days a week (excluding holidays, holiday weekends, and red routes) if vehicle or load do not exceed 18’ wide, 120’ long or 18’ high (over 17’ high requires Helena approval).

Travel is allowed during the hours of daylight Monday through Friday for vehicles exceeding 18’ wide, 120’ long or 18’ high (over 17’ high must have Helena approval), but travel is prohibited on Saturdays, Sundays, holidays and holiday weekends.

Holidays

Since the end of August 2020, holiday and holiday weekend travel on interstate highways is allowed 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, up to 18’ wide, including essential services within 1/2 mile of the interstate highway.

Holiday and holiday weekend travel on non-interstate highways is allowed 24 hours per day, 7 days per week for loads up to 10’ wide and/or 15’6” high.

Loads exceeding 10’ wide and/or >15’6” high up to 12’6” wide and/or 15/6” high may travel during daylight hours only.

Holidays are New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.

Holiday weekend means a period of consecutive calendar days adjacent to a holiday, during which travel is prohibited. Holiday weekend time periods include:

  • a holiday which falls on a Friday or Saturday, prohibiting travel on Friday, Saturday or Sunday;
  • a holiday which falls on a Sunday or Monday, prohibiting travel on Saturday, Sunday or Monday;
  • a holiday which falls on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, prohibiting travel on that day only; or
  • the Thanksgiving holiday, prohibiting travel on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Adverse weather

During the spring when temperatures cause road surface to breakup and generally deteriorate, the highways most affected are restricted to lower axle weights and speed restrictions which can be found at http://www.mdt.mt.gov/travinfo.

When winter road conditions are encountered, the company or the operator shall discontinue operations, and operations shall not be resumed until the conditions improve. Winter road conditions include snow covered; snow packed and icy; high wind warnings; or blowing and drifting causing reduced visibility. No travel is allowed when a route has been placed under severe driving conditions as determined by the Department of Transportation

Restricted travel

Red route highways: Travel is not allowed after 3PM on Friday until sunrise on Saturday and from noon on Sunday to sunrise on Monday if dimensions exceed 10′ wide or 110′ long or 15’6″ high or 55′ long (single unit). Travel is not allowed after 3PM on Friday until sunrise on Monday if dimensions exceed 18′ wide or 120′ long.
