Escorts

When escorts are needed and number of escorts required

On all highways:

  • Overall length greater than 99′ up to 120′ requires 1 escort (Rear)
  • Overall length over 120′ requires 2 escorts (Front & Rear)
  • Width greater than 13′ up to 16′ requires 1 escort (Rear)
  • Width greater than 16′ requires 2 escorts (Front & Rear)
  • Overhang of 15′ or more in front requires 1 escort (Front or Rear)
  • Overhang of 15′ or more in rear requires 1 escort (Front or Rear)
  • Height of loads controlled by route clearance requires 1 escort (Front)
  • Weight on loads controlled by pavement and bridge clearance requires 1 escort (Rear)

When moving at night operating on 2-lane roadways (1 lane per direction of travel) loads 10’ wide or greater will require, at minimum, the use of a front escort and flashing amber lights mounted on the rear of the load.

When moving at night operating on divided highways (2 or more through lanes per direction of travel) loads 10’ wide or greater will require, at minimum, the use of a rear escort and flashing amber lights mounted on the rear of the load.

If a load is only overlength, a permit is not required.

Super loads

A super load is any vehicle that exceeds any of the following limits:

  • Overall width of 20′
  • Overall length of 120′
  • Overall height of 17′
  • Gross weight of 190,000 pounds

Escort vehicle requirements can differ significantly by state in terms of mandatory driver qualifications, training, certifications, vehicle weights, obligatory signage/flags/lighting, necessary onboard equipment, and more. The ODS team can provide you with all additional requirements specific to your route.

Operating Times

Travel is permitted from 1/2 hour after sunrise to 1/2 hour before sunset Monday through Saturday. No travel is permitted on Sundays, major holidays, or after noon on days preceding major holidays unless otherwise specified.

Night movements may be permitted for loads not exceeding 12’ in width, 150,000 lbs. or 99’ long (maximum rear overhang 4’).

When moving at night operating on 2-lane roadways (1 lane per direction of travel) loads 10’ wide or greater will require, at minimum, the use of a front escort and flashing amber lights mounted on the rear of the load.

When moving at night operating on divided highways (2 or more through lanes per direction of travel) loads 10’ wide or greater will require, at minimum, the use of a rear escort and flashing amber lights mounted on the rear of the load.

Holidays

Unless permitted, movement will not be allowed on Sunday, after noon on days preceding or on the following holidays: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.

Adverse weather

  • Movements shall not be made during times of heavy rain, snow, during other hazardous weather conditions, or any time when the ground speed of the wind exceeds 25 miles per hour.
  • Overwidth loads shall not be moved during inclement weather.
