One or more Maine State Police officers must be present to escort overdimensional vehicles moving at night.

*The above regulations specifically apply to movements of objects that are not mobile or modular homes.

Escort vehicle requirements can differ significantly by state in terms of mandatory driver qualifications, training, certifications, vehicle weights, obligatory signage/flags/lighting, necessary onboard equipment, and more. The ODS team can provide you with all additional requirements specific to your route.

Operating Times

Vehicles permitted for overweight-only that are capable of moving with the flow of traffic may move at any time of day. The overdimensional vehicle must pull over to the right as far as it can, as soon as safely, possible, to allow following traffic exceeding 7 vehicles to pass safely.

Oversized loads are limited to travel one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset. Travel is allowed on weekends except during July and August when most weekend travel is permitted (call for more information). No travel is allowed on major holidays.

Moves are prohibited Saturday and Sunday in July and August, except for equipment moving entirely within the seven northern counties. Call for more information.

Whenever possible, vehicles exceeding legal limits should be moved during periods when traffic is lightest. Overdimensional permits requested for travel on weekends during July and August and on holidays throughout the year require pre-clearance by the Maine Department of Transportation’s Traffic Engineering Division 1.

Moves are not routinely permitted 1/2 hour after sunset to 1/2 hour before sunrise, legal holidays and weekends in July and August. Night travel may be authorized by any Maine State Police Troop Commander for travel at such times and places where public safety will not be adversely affected.

Travel in areas when fairs and festivals are occurring may preclude the issuance of overdimensional permits. An applicant requesting such permits must allow at least two working days’ notice to obtain necessary clearances.

Travel is restricted in Augusta, Bangor, Lewiston, and Portland between 7:00am and 9:00am and between 4:00pm and 6:00pm.

Throughout the year, the following restrictions are in effect: mobile homes and modular units 11’6” to 13’6” wide are excluded from moving Saturdays, Sundays, and all legal holidays; mobile homes and modular units 13’7” to 14’6” wide are excluded from moving Friday after noon, Saturdays, Sundays, and all legal holidays; and mobile homes and modular units over 14’6” wide are prohibited from moving on Thursdays followed by a Friday legal holiday, Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and all legal holidays.

Adverse weather

Before making move, carrier shall check road and weather conditions at If driving conditions on permitted route are considered ‘difficult’ or “ice/hazardous”, the overlimit movement must wait until conditions improve to travel.
