Escorts

When escorts are needed and # of escorts required

On undivided highways

  • Width over 12’4″ to 14’3″ requires 1 escort (Front)
  • Width 14’4″ – 17′ requires 2 escorts (Front & Rear)
  • Length over 110′ requires 1 escort (Front)
  • Height over 14’6″ requires 1 escort (Front) with a height pole

On divided highways

  • Width over 12’4″ to 14’3″ requires 1 escort (Rear)
  • Width 14’4″ to 17′ requires 1 escort (Rear)
  • Length over 110′ requires 1 escort (Rear)
  • Height over 14’6″ requires 1 escort (Front) with a height pole

Superloads & Police Escorts

A Superload is any vehicle (plus its load) which exceeds the following weights and dimensions:

  • Width exceeding 17’
  • Height exceeding 15’
  • Length exceeding 110’
  • Weight exceeding 108,000 lbs.

Superloads weighing less than 134,000 lbs. may require a police escort depending on road conditions. Superloads weighing 134,000 lbs. or more require a police escort if the route includes bridge slowdowns. All superloads require a permit issued by the Indiana Department of Revenue (IDOR).

Superloads weighing ≥200,000 lbs. require 4 police escorts.

Superload escorts may occur only Monday through Friday, between 8:30AM and 3:30PM, unless it is deemed an emergency movement and such movement is approved by INDOT or IDOR.

Escort vehicle requirements can differ significantly by state in terms of mandatory driver qualifications, training, certifications, vehicle weights, obligatory signage/flags/lighting, necessary onboard equipment, and more. The ODS team can provide you with all additional requirements specific to your route.

Operating Times

Loads 110′ long, 10′ wide, 13’6″ high and with a weight under 134,000 pounds are allowed continuous travel seven days a week.

Loads over 110′ long and over 10′ to 14’4″ wide, and up to 15′ high may travel 7 days a week from one-half hour before sunrise until one-half hour after sunset 7 days a week.

Loads between 14’4” and 16’ wide can travel Monday through Friday from one-half hour before sunrise until one-half hour after sunset.

Loads over 16’ wide or greater than 15’ high or with a gross vehicle weight over 120,000 pounds can only travel from Monday to Friday between the hours of 8:30am and 3:30pm (other provisions may apply) *

Loads up to 110 long, 11’6 wide, 13’ 6” high and 120,000 lbs. can travel Monday through Friday from one-half hour before sunrise until one-half hour after sunset.

Loads up to 110′ long, 11’6” wide and 13’06″ high and 120,000 lbs (for paving equipment only to travel between jobsite(s) and home base with red/amber flashing light at widest point) can travel Monday through Friday from one hour to one-half hour before sunrise until one hour to one-half hour after sunset.

Permitted Mobile Homes and Sectionalized Buildings between 8’6″ and 14’4″ wide can travel Monday through Friday from one-half hour before sunrise until one-half hour after sunset. Saturday one-half hour before sunrise to 12:00 PM noon.

Superload escorts may occur only Monday through Friday, between 8:30AM and 3:30PM

Holidays

Permitted vehicles may not operate on state highways from noon the last weekday preceding and continuing until 30 minutes before sunrise on the day following New Year’s Day, Labor Day, Memorial Day, Thanksgiving, Independence Day, and Christmas Day.

Vehicles with Overweight Commodity Permits are no longer subject to holiday travel restrictions and may travel continuously during holiday periods.

Adverse weather

Permitted oversized vehicles are not allowed to operate:

  • during hazardous weather, road, or traffic conditions, and/or when visibility is less than 500’.
  • when wind velocity exceeds 25 miles per hour.
