Escorts
When escorts are needed and number of escorts required
ON DIVIDED HIGHWAYS
Width: maximum 16' wide
- Up to 12' is a legal load and no escort is required
- Greater than 12' up to 13'6" requires 1 Rear escort
- Greater than 13'6" requires 2 escorts (Front and Rear)
- 15' or more requires 3 escorts (1 Front and 2 Rear)
- Over 13'5" wide and more than 15' high requires 2 state police escorts (Front and Rear)
Height
- Greater than 14’0” requires 1 Front escort
- 15’1” high or greater and 13’6” width or wider requires 1 Front escort and 2 state police escorts (Front and Rear)
- 15’4” high or greater requires 1 Front escort and 2 state police escorts (Front and Rear)
Length
- Greater than 100' requires 1 Rear escort
- Greater than 119' requires 2 escorts (Front and Rear)
Overhang
- 25' front or rear overhand requires 1 Rear escort
ON UNDIVIDED HIGHWAYS
Width: maximum 16' wide

- Routes, heights, character of load, and traffic volume also determine escorts requirements on case-by-case basis

MOBILE/MODULAR/SECTIONAL HOUSING

- Greater than 13'6" requires 2 escorts (Front and Rear) on both divided and undivided highways
- Night moves (pilot program) for loads greater than 14' require 2 escorts (Front and Rear) and 1 state police escort (Rear) on both divided and undivided highways
Length (maximum 66' box and 90')
- Greater than 80' requires 1 Rear escort on undivided highways
- Greater than 85' requires 2 escorts (Front and Rear) on both divided and undivided highways
- Greater than 90' requires an additional 1 Rear escort on undivided highways
- Night moves (pilot program) for loads greater than 90' up to a maximum of 104' long require 2 escorts (Front and Rear) and 1 state police escort (Rear) on both divided and undivided highways

Escort vehicle requirements can differ significantly by state in terms of mandatory driver qualifications, training, certifications, vehicle weights, obligatory signage/flags/lighting, necessary onboard equipment, and more.
