Escorts

When escorts are generally needed  # of escorts

Escort vehicle requirements can differ significantly by state in terms of mandatory driver qualifications, training, certifications, vehicle weights, obligatory signage/flags/lighting, necessary onboard equipment, and more. The ODS team can provide you with all additional requirements specific to your route.

Operating Times

With a pilot car, all permit vehicles/loads are authorized travel 24/7 until the loaded width exceeds 14′ or 16′ (depending on route: see below). Travel is then permitted from one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset, although the Department of Transportation may grant night and weekend operations depending on the dimensions of the load. Night and weekend travel must be requested at time of ordering.

Yellow routes:

When the load width exceeds 16′, the vehicle/load will be escorted by the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The CHP in coordination with the District Traffic Manager(s) (DTMs) will determine hours of travel.

Green routes:

All permit vehicles/loads are authorized to travel during daylight hours (including weekends) until the load width exceeds 15′ at which point a California Highway Patrol (CHP) escort is required. The CHP in coordination with the District Traffic Manager(s) (DTMs) will determine hours of travel. All permit vehicles/loads are authorized to travel during hours of darkness (including weekends) until the load width exceeds 14′. Darkness is from 1/2 hour after sunset to 1/2 hour before sunrise.

Blue & Brown routes:

All permit vehicles/loads are authorized travel until the load width exceeds 15′ at which point a California Highway Patrol (CHP) escort is required during daylight hours, excluding weekends. The CHP in coordination with the District Traffic Manager(s) (DTMs) will determine hours of travel. Travel during hours of darkness is not authorized (from 1/2 hour after sunset to 1/2 hour before sunrise). Weekend travel is authorized on Saturday and Sunday from 1/2 hour prior to sunrise until noon.

Red routes:

Holidays

When the movement requires an escort, travel is prohibited on the following holidays: New Year’s Day, Labor Day, Washington’s Birthday, Thanksgiving Day, Memorial Day, Christmas Day, and Independence Day.

Restricted travel

Operators of vehicles over 10′ in width may not travel Monday through Friday through the following areas at the times noted:

Los Angeles and vicinity 6AM-9AM & 3PM-6PM
Sacramento and vicinity 7AM-9AM & 4PM-6PM
San Diego and vicinity 7AM-9AM & 4PM-6PM
San Francisco/Oakland Bay Bridge 6:30AM-9AM & 3:30PM-6:30PM
San Francisco and vicinity 7AM-9AM & 4PM-6PM

Weather: Movement shall not occur in snow, fog, rain or wind when visibility is restricted to less than 1,000’ (304.8 meters). Movement is prohibited when road surfaces are hazardous due to rain, ice, snow or frost, or when use of tire chains is mandatory. In addition, manufactured housing shall not move when the velocity of the wind is such that it causes the vehicle being towed to whip or swerve from side-to-side or fail to follow substantially in the path of the towing vehicle.
