Escorts

When escorts are needed and # of escorts required

  • All loads with front overhang of 20′ require a front escort, and with a rear 20′ overhang, a rear escort.
  • Escort requirements are considered on a case-by-case basis for combinations over 14′ width, 120′ length, and 16′ height, and may vary depending upon the load to be hauled.
  • In its rules and regulations, Arizona lists a number of state routes that require front and rear escorts, generally over 12′ in width.

Escort vehicle requirements can differ significantly by state in terms of mandatory driver qualifications, training, certifications, vehicle weights, obligatory signage/flags/lighting, necessary onboard equipment, and more. The ODS team can provide you with all additional requirements specific to your route.

Operating Times

Travel is permitted during daylight hours: 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset.

Drivers of an oversize or overweight special permitted vehicle is eligible for continuous travel if the vehicle or vehicle and load combination does not exceed any of the following dimensions:

  • 10 feet in width;
  • 14 feet 6 inches in height;
  • 3 feet in length of front overhang;
  • 10 feet in length of rear overhang;
  • 120 feet in overall length; or
  • 250,000 pounds

Weekend travel

Drivers of an oversize or overweight special permitted vehicle, ineligible for continuous travel due to excess width or height, may transport on a Saturday or Sunday on any non-holiday weekend from 3:00AM to noon on select routes authorized by the Department for weekend transport and subject to an applicable escort accompaniment as follows:
a) Over 11′ to 14′ in width requires a rear escort,
b) Over 14′ to 16′ in width requires a front and rear escort, and
c) Over 15′ in height requires a front escort with a height pole.

Holiday travel

  • When a holiday occurs on a Friday, transport shall stop at 12 noon on the preceding Thursday and may resume the following Monday at 1/2 hour before sunrise, or Monday at 3:00AM if night transport is allowed under R17-6-409.
  • When a holiday occurs on a Saturday, transport shall stop at 12 noon on the preceding Thursday and may resume the following Monday at 1/2 hour before sunrise, or Monday at 3:00AM if night transport is allowed under R17-6-409.
  • When a holiday occurs on a Sunday, transport shall stop at 12 noon on the preceding Friday and may resume the following Tuesday at 1/2 hour before sunrise, or Tuesday at 3:00AM if night transport is allowed under R17-6-409.
  • When a holiday occurs on a Monday, transport shall stop at 12 noon on the preceding Friday and may resume the following Tuesday at 1/2 hour before sunrise, or Tuesday at 3:00AM if night transport is allowed under R17-6-409.
  • When a holiday occurs on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, transport shall stop at 12 noon on the day before the holiday and may resume the day after the holiday at 1/2 hour before sunrise, or the day after the holiday at 3:00AM if night transport is allowed under R17-6-409.

Restricted travel

No movement will be allowed during snow, dust, fog, icy conditions or any severe weather conditions which might:

  • Destabilize loads and endanger roads or traffic;
  • Limit driver visibility range to less than 500 feet;
  • Create road surface conditions that reduce normal traction.

Tucson Area: Interstate 10, 19, 77 and 86 within various city limits of the greater Tucson area restricted during rush hours (7:00AM – 9:00AM and 4:00PM – 6:00PM).
